Gerber baby Foods came on the market in 1928. The advertising campaign was trying to convince mothers that a canned food could be good for their babies. Even though the company had the support of baby doctors and nutritionists they needed something else. The father and son, who owned the company, decide they needed a baby picture to represent the company image. So they held the first Gerber baby Photo Contest. Way back then it wasn’t as easy as today with a digital camera to get a picture. Even though back then they had film it was still extremely difficult to use. So most of the baby pictures received at the company were of pencil or charcoal sketches and some were of water colors and oils. They made a decision on a charcoal drawing. The baby picture was on the label for over 70 years.
Today, Gerber baby Foods and Products offer more then 190 different products in over 80 countries and in 16 languages. Now with all the different products available, the company had to continue to look for fresh baby faces and even older children. So they expanded the Gerber baby Contest to include the different age groups that goes along with their product lines. All the contests are free to enter. You just need to follow the rules and guidelines for sending in pictures. The contest has a helpful hints section, it’s there to help parent(s)get the most out of the pictures they send in. The past winners section gives the first time submitters an idea on what the judges are looking for.
